St. George School Model UN-ited for Haiti
On Tuesday, January 12th the Republic of Haiti was devastated by an earthquake of 7.0 on the Richter scale. This natural disaster left a scar in the morale of our neighboring nation where thousands were either deceased or displaced and the world looked on with impotence as the survivors cried out for help. The St. George School Model United Nations group (SGS-MUN) realized what needed to be done and set in motion a Relief Drive.
During the arduous preparations that take place before and during a Model UN conference, our delegates learn how to find quick and viable solutions to existing world problems, yet knowing that the Resolution Papers they present before their Committees do not reach the Heads of States. This was the moment to set forth what has been learned and reach out to help the Republic of Haiti.
Our Secretary General, Diana Mansour, and our President, Virginia Peralta, identified institutions that were in charge of organizing the relief efforts and held an Emergency Session with the SGS-MUN delegates where the information was shared. Phone calls were placed; charts were prepared; chores were divided and in less than seven days, our group was able to receive donations from all of the SGS Family which included: water, medicine, canned goods, milk, oral re-hydrating solution, blankets, amongst other things (please see attached inventory). While the delegates were organizing their efforts at school, they also participated in volunteering their time during two consecutive weekends to load and unload trucks at the Centro Bono where donations were being sent to the survivors in Haiti.
The SGS-MUN delegates know what the true definition of solidarity means when they were willing and able to come in also during a national holiday (January 21st) to load the truck that would take all of the donations to the Centro Bono''s warehouse. Students, parents and teachers were united knowing that their efforts were concentrated on providing some sense of relief and hope for the affected families who will always remember that their misfortune was in some extent alleviated by the kindness of the SGS-MUN group.
